Amana Living, one of WA’s leading providers of care and services for over-55s, has become the 2016 sponsor of the $7,500 People’s Choice Prize for the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture - WA’s only portrait prize that attracts entries from across Australia.
Now in its 10th year, this is the first time that Amana Living has supported the prestigious event as a community partner.
This sponsorship is in addition to the main $50,000 Lester Group Prize, $10,000 Toni Fini Foundation Artist Prize and $500 each for two highly commended artists from art supplier HU Kendall & Co. This makes the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture the third richest prize in Australia behind the Archibald and Moran competitions.
In addition to providing the cash prize, Amana Living will participate in a number of creative initiatives during August, September and October such as in-house portraiture workshops and programs at Amana Living residences, and an exhibition of selected artworks at the Perth Cultural Centre.
Amana Living residents, their families and staff will also take part in art workshops and a community exhibition at the Perth Cultural Centre, as well as participate in guided tours of the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture exhibition.
Amana Living CEO Ray Glickman said, “Art brings a freedom of expression and meaningful engagement for older people who may be isolated by loss of mobility or conditions like dementia. Our partnership with the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture is a perfect opportunity for Amana Living to expand its existing art program to all of our residents and clients.
“It will provide more opportunities for them to communicate and connect through Art, and to find new ways to tell the stories that we should all listen to.”

This collaboration between health and the arts is in keeping with the findings from a report released last month by Hon. John Day MLA, Minister for Health; Culture and the Arts, looking at the use of the arts to improve health and healing in WA hospitals. This report is a reminder that arts and culture have a vital part to play in enriching, supporting, encouraging, comforting and healing the community. The full report can be viewed here: cacwa.org.au/documents/item/504
