Japan on Horizon for Five Lucky ACH Group Employees

on Monday, July 9, 2018

Five ACH Group employees are heading to Japan in October as part of a biannual exchange program between not-for-profit aged care provider ACH Group and Japanese aged care provider Sun-Life.

The group of employees include Lifestyle Coordinator Angie Clark, Support Worker Mandy Neaylon, Registered Nurse Hui Hui Voo, Team Leader Mandy Wilkins and Head of Health and Wellness Kate Dobie. Perry Park care worker Miyuki Wheelwright will join them to act as translator.

Hui Hui Voo, a Registered Nurse at ACH Group’s Highercombe and Milpara Residential care homes, is looking forward to the trip.

“I would like to learn about the philosophy and theory of caring for older people in Japan, the technology and vision for hearing impairment to increase individual connections,” she says.

Others plan to investigate how services are meeting the changing needs of the Japanese population, the Sun-Life approach to staff training, wellbeing and retention and how health outcomes are measured.

Staff chosen will form the Sun-Life Organising Committee to support a group from Sun-Life who will visit ACH Group sites in late August as part of the exchange.

They will head to Japan in mid-October for a ‘once in a lifetime’ trip to learn more about aged care in Japan.

ACH Group Learning and Development Manager Rebecca Burns says: “This exchange program allows professionals from the aged care sector in Japan to engage with our staff, customers and volunteers to learn more about our Good Lives approach and our innovative approaches to dementia care, planning ahead, respite and independent living. This is a great learning opportunity for ACH Group employees and we look forward to hearing about their experiences when they return.”

ACH Group is widely considered an innovator in the aged care sector, transforming itself from a provider of aged care services to a promoter of good lives for older people.

“An important part of this approach is the deliberate focus on the training and retention of a passionate, highly competent workforce,” Ms Burns says. “Opportunities for further development, such as provided by the Sun-Life scholarship program, are a great way to ensure our staff are engaged, connected and love what they do.”
