Volunteer Caroline Has a Heart of Gold

With International Volunteer Day coming up on Saturday 5 December, Subiaco local Caroline Woo says volunteering at a local not-for-profit aged care home is not only rewarding, it also gives her a sense of gratitude and belonging.

Ms Woo visits residents every Tuesday at Mercy Health’s Mercy Place Mont Clare, where she has been matched with 94-year-old retired nurse Gaye Galvin, who she describes as incredibly wise, and for whom she says she has huge admiration.

“I work for myself so I’m fortunate to have the flexibility to volunteer my time, which makes me feel like I’m contributing and giving back to the community in some way,” says 51-year-old Ms Woo who has been visiting Gaye for close to five years.

“It is so wonderful to be able to spend time with the older generation who have so much learned wisdom and have had so many interesting life experiences. Chatting with Gaye over a cup of tea is an incredibly enjoyable thing to do, I have learned so much about her life and also her generation as we have talked, and I know she very much looks forward to our catch ups too.”

Mercy Place Mont Clare Service Manager, Surabh Nair, says Mercy Health’s volunteers are selfless and caring members of the community.

“We are very fortunate that Caroline chose to volunteer at Mont Clare, and in the five years that she has been with us she has brought joy to our residents, particularly Gaye, with whom she has forged a strong friendship,” he says.

“Strong relationships are so important to people’s lives and we know that having passionate volunteers and staff in aged care homes who bring a sense of ‘togetherness’ makes a significant contribution to the quality of life of those in our care.

“Indeed, we are very fortunate to have so many committed and dedicated volunteers like Caroline who are always willing to go the extra mile for our residents, and International Volunteer Day gives us a wonderful opportunity to recognise them.”

Mercy Place Mont Clare will recognise its volunteers with a special morning tea to celebrate International Volunteer Day.
