Residents and Staff Acknowledge Love and Loyalty for Australia at Mercy Place Mont Clare

on Tuesday, January 19, 2021

One of Mercy Place Mont Clare’s most respected and appreciated members of staff will celebrate her love and loyalty for her adopted country on Australia Day, as the not-for-profit aged care home reflects on the nation’s 60,000 years of history.

Registered Nurse, Sujaya Adhikari, who originally hails from Nepal, arrived in Western Australia in 2007 to study, first attaining a Diploma in Nursing, and then gaining her Bachelor of Nursing from Edith Cowan University.

And after meeting her Nepalese husband in Perth, the mother of one has firmly made the world’s most remote city ‘home’, admitting she loves living in Australia and was hugely proud and excited to be granted citizenship back in 2015.

“I could not be happier living in Perth and am very settled here, particularly working at Mercy Place Mont Clare where we are like a big family,” says Ms Sujaya, whose own parents and siblings remain in Nepal.

“I find Australians easy to get along with, I enjoy the culture and the environment and I’ve made many friends here. And on top of that I love my job at Mercy Place Mont Clare, caring for the residents we have living here.

“Although I get homesick from time to time, particularly during festival times in my homeland, I very much feel that Perth is my home, and I’m told that my devotion to Tim Tams has now made me a true Aussie,” she laughs.

Ms Adhikari will join in the celebrations for Australia Day with a traditional Aussie barbecue, though she will treat residents to a taste of her homeland, by wearing a traditional sari to also celebrate Australia’s proud history of multiculturalism.

Mercy Place Woree Service Manager, Surabh Nair, said the Mercy Health team was made up of many staff members who were born overseas, and as such the aged care home had a rich culture of diversity and comradeship.

“Everyone is looking forward to Australia Day celebrations at Mercy Place Mont Clare as our lifestyle staff have planned several events this year to really engage residents with the spirit of a great nation,” he says.

“We all feel that it’s a time to celebrate our identity and culture as Australians, while expressing how respectful we are of other people’s culture and heritage.”
