Great-Great-Grandmother Breaks Bungy Jump Record

on Friday, May 1, 2015

At 91 years old, great-great-grandmother Mary Manssen has claimed the title of the ‘Oldest Female Bungy Jumper’ after jumping an incredible 43 metres off the Kawarau Bridge in Queenstown, New Zealand.

“It was nothing. There’s nothing to it. They (the staff) just gave me a little push,” Mary said.

“The jump was magnificent. The roar that went up when I went out onto the stand was just amazing. I’m a bit of a daredevil. When I was younger, I always thought ‘the higher up the tree the better,’” she explained.

This jump was the second for Mary, who also did the Kawarau jump in 2008, aged 84.

Mary decided to take up bungy jumping when her husband, Frank, passed away seven years ago.

“When he died, I thought I’d bungy jump and also take a flight in a helicopter onto the snow.”

Mary said it was good for people to “get off their backsides and do something. The busier you are, the happier you are.”

She was able to show off her photos of her jump at her local bowling club and said “they were rapt. They couldn’t believe it!”
