Southern Cross Care SA, NT & VIC's Short-Term Restorative Care Program has set Paul Needle back on track to return to his beloved ParkRun. Paul has completed over 300 ParkRuns, most of them as a volunteer tail walker at the Mount Barker event. He walks at the back of the pack at a leisurely pace and makes sure no one gets left behind.
At the heart of the Charingfield Aged Care community in Sydney’s eastern beaches are some incredible individuals – a group of volunteers who dedicate their time, energy and compassion to enhancing the lives of residents. Manager, Laxmi Bhandari, says the volunteers are an integral part of the family, bringing their own special joy, support and friendship to residents and staff.
At 16, Resthaven Westbourne Park resident Wilfred (Wilf) Gelsthorpe won his first talent competition. It was in Sheffield, England, at a local pub.
‘My brother’s friend kept entering these competitions,’ Wilf says. ‘But he never won. I was always whistling away, so they encouraged me to have a go and on my first competition I scored a perfect 30 – 10/10 from each of the three judges!’
Last week, Anne Graham, a resident at Royal Freemasons and celebrated Australian artist, marked her 100th birthday. Born in Vienna, Austria in 1925, Anne emigrated to Australia with her family in 1939, on the cusp of World War II.
“I was inspired by Yvonne’s inner strength because she has set goals for herself and made a purpose for her life, always striving to fulfill her duties and find peace,” says Gill Waminda Aged Care Centre’s (“Gill Waminda”) Lifestyle Coordinator, Leah Staples, of a recent resident to the Centre, Yvonne. “Yvonne has built up resilience to help her through the tough times.”
When 91-year-old Betty Cowcher moved to Bethanie Como, it marked a significant turning point in her life. Born and raised in Williams, initially on a farm and then in the Wheatbelt town, Betty had always been fiercely independent, surrounded by nature and tending to her beloved garden.
