Six Senior Record Holders

on Monday, November 9, 2015

Getting older is often associated with frailty and other negative stereotypes, but many people only get better with age.

Here are six inspiring world record holders that really do prove that age is just a number.

1. The World’s Oldest Sprinter

This is Hidekichi Miyazaki, a 105-year-old Japanese man who recently broke the world record for the oldest sprinter. He only took up track and field in his 90s and just last month completed the 100-metre sprint in just over 42 seconds!

2. The World’s Oldest Pilot

In early 2015, 96-year-old George Neal from Canada became the world’s oldest active pilot. He was born in 1918 –the very early days of aviation! He is a retired test pilot but still flies his own small aircraft regularly.

3. The Oldest Person to Abseil

Doris Long became the world’s oldest person the abseil – at the age of 101! She abseiled down a 300-foot tower in England, breaking her own world record she’d previously set on her 100th birthday in 2014.

4. The Most Marathons Run in One Year

Larry Macon was 69-years-old when he broke the world record for most marathon runs in a year by a male – running an incredible 239! He only started running marathons in 1996 and received his first Guinness World record in 2008 with 105 marathons in a year.

5. The World’s Oldest Newlyweds

Doreen Luckie and George Kirby are thought to have become the world’s oldest newlyweds earlier this year. The couple tied the knot when Doreen was 91 and George 103 after dating for 27 years.

6. The World’s Oldest Yoga Teacher

In 2012, Tao Porchon-Lynch was recognised as the world’s oldest yoga teacher at 93. She has been travelling around the world teaching yoga for more than 50 years.
