Going the Extra Mile

on Monday, March 21, 2016

A day on the beach is something taken for granted by many people, but it is not always possible for people with limited mobility or health conditions.

Claire Pout, a resident at Southern Cross Care Rosebud aged care home, has always had a strong affinity with the sea. However, going to the beach seemed almost impossible for the 83-year-old until the home recently bought an all-terrain beach wheelchair.

Funded by Southern Cross Care (Vic)’s Imagine Fund, the beach wheelchair has large, inflatable tyres that enable it to travel across sand or semi-rough surfaces which are not accessible with conventional wheelchairs.

“I’ve always loved the sea so it is really wonderful to feel fresh sea breeze in my face again,” said Claire, who thoroughly enjoyed her day out at the beach.

Due to significant health issues in her mid-30s, Claire has spent large periods of her life in hospitals. Since moving into the aged care home thirteen years ago, Claire’s health has been well supported by the staff of the Rosebud home.

"Claire enjoys socialising with other residents and this includes getting out and about in the community. That's why she was delighted to be included in the recent outing at the beach," said Lisa Hughes, manager of Southern Cross Care Rosebud.

“We are happy to see the residents having such a good time. It has been an exhilarating experience for everyone, particularly for Claire.”

Southern Cross Care is organising its annual charity golf day in April, and hopes to use funds raised from the event to support more positive lifestyle opportunities for residents at their homes.
