Seniors Join in Global Celebrations for World Environment Day

on Wednesday, June 8, 2016

Seniors at a Claremont-based aged care home joined people and communities around the world to celebrate World Environment Day on Sunday June 5.

And to mark the day, residents at Mercy Place Mont Clare planted a beautifully established frangipani tree on the street verge outside the home on Dean Street, for everyone to enjoy.

Mercy Place Mont Clare Service Manager, Jenny Jones, said residents were focused on what positive steps they could take to make a difference within their own community, and had agreed on planting a tree for locals to enjoy.

“Mercy Health is focused on sustainability and care for our environment, as are our residents, and this is just one of a number of ‘green’ initiatives we are currently working on,” says Ms Jones.

“Despite our residents’ being elderly, they are still involved in our immediate community and saw World Environment Day as a way of raising awareness and encouraging positive action for the environment, and everyone thought this was a really lovely initiative that so many locals will gain pleasure from now and in years to come.

"Trees enhance our landscape, provide habitat for birds and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and so we’re very proud of our residents and their motivation to improve not only our local environment, but also our local community.”

World Environment Day is an initiative of the United Nations Environmental Program.
