Home Care in the ACT

on Monday, August 1, 2016

Home care is ideal if you want to remain living in your own home and need a little extra help around the house. In the Australian Capital Territory, a number of home care providers can tailor a home care program to suit your needs.

Home care services can provide assistance with:

  • Personal care (showering, dressing etc)
  • Domestic assistance (cooking, cleaning, meal preparation)
  • Shopping
  • Transport to and from appointments
  • Socialising and companionship
  • Respite care
  • Overnight care
  • 24-hour care
  • Nursing care
  • Home and garden maintenance

There are two ways that you can access home care services. If you are eligible, you will be able to receive Government funding for a Home Care Package. To find out if you are eligible, you will need to be assessed by your local ACAT – Aged Care Assessment Team.

Once you have been assessed and deemed eligible for a Home Care Package, you will be placed into one of four Home Care Package levels, depending on your care needs:

  • Level 1: Basic care
  • Level 2: Low-level care
  • Level 3: Intermediate care
  • Level 4: High-level care

Each Home Care Package level receives different amounts of funding from the Government. Once you have been approved and received your Home Care Package funds, you will be able to choose the home care provider that suits you. Home care providers in the ACT include:

These home care providers will help you to tailor a home care program that allows you to remain living as independently as possible in your own home.

Consumer Directed Care (CDC) has recently been introduced to home care, meaning you have more flexibility and choice in selecting your home care provider. You can also select exactly what home care services you receive and choose precisely how your home care funds are spent.

If you are ineligible to receive home care funding from the Government, you can always self-fund your own home care program.
