All Aboard for an Overseas Adventure

on Tuesday, November 29, 2016

Residents living at UCWPA's Regency Green Multicultural Aged Care home are travelling around the world from the comfort of their arm chairs.

The site’s new program, Arm Chair Travel, started in October with Serbia the first stop on the residents’ adventures.

They were treated to a presentation about Serbia including music, facts, photos and videos, as well as an afternoon tea of Serbian treats such as cevapcici, sauerkraut and sour cherry cordial.

Presenter Jazzmine, whose family comes from Serbia, also delighted residents with her rendition of Marija Serifovic’s song, Malitva, which won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007.

Regency Green Acting Activities Officer Margaret Renn says a different country will be visited each month by the residents, who are keenly interested in learning about other cultures.

“A lot of our residents did travel or lived in other places when they were younger – very few people were actually born and raised in Adelaide,” Ms Renn, who was born in Serbia, says.

“They are really interested in different cultures and while they can no longer physically go to these places, we can bring them to them.”

Later this month, Activities Officer Wenyao Gao will lead the residents for a journey to Guangzhou – the Chinese city where she grew up.

In December, Activities Officer Anna-Maria Magnera will take residents on a special trip looking at how Christmas is celebrated around-the-world.

“It keeps them connected to their cultures, it keeps them connected to their wider communities and socially they are connecting with each other as well,” Ms Renn says.

“I really feel like we are making an impact in the residents’ lives.”
