Improving Aged Care for LGBTI Senior Australians

The Minister for Aged Care, Ken Wyatt AM, MP today released the findings of the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Aged Care Strategy Review.

“The review indicates that the Strategy initiated five years ago has had a positive effect but it is important to keep the momentum going and build on the success of this work,” Minister Wyatt said.

“The Australian Government wants all senior Australians to access the services they need and expect as they get older – and recognising diversity is a key factor in meeting that expectation.”

The Review notes substantial progress in aged care workforce training to support older LGBTI Australians, and improved collaboration between the Government and the LGBTI sector.

The Government has implemented a range of programs to support older LGBTI Australians.

In funding rounds since the Strategy commenced, more than $8 million in grants has been allocated to grants that promote health and wellbeing for older people who are LGBTI. 

The Government is also providing over $4 million (GST inclusive) to the National LGBTI Health Alliance over three years to provide LGBTI Awareness Training to ageing and aged care providers and workers.

This training will help aged care providers, facilities and stakeholders to be more LGBTI aware and sensitive, and incorporate LGBTI inclusive practices in their organisations.

“I thank the LGBTI Aged Care Strategy Working Group and applaud the contribution made by providers, peak bodies and individuals to ensure this review was comprehensive and provides a way forward,” Minister Wyatt said.

“The review has informed the development of the new Aged Care Diversity Framework, which I expect to release next month.”
