Morrison Gardens’ Piano Man

on Wednesday, March 17, 2021

Residents at Baptistcare Morrison Gardens Residential Aged Care in Midland are regularly treated to exclusive performances by fellow resident Anthony DeGrys.

But what they may not realise is their piano man is ‘busking royalty’ from his days entertaining the crowds at Fremantle’s iconic markets.

When Anthony moved to Perth in 1951 from the Netherlands, he brought a passion for music instilled by his piano teacher uncle.

He went on to play piano in many Perth bands and became a Freo markets favourite playing the piano accordion in the 90s.

Anthony’s partner, Maria Boekelman, said busking was a way to share his love of music with the world.

"I bought him an electronic keyboard to play at Morrison Gardens.”

“Music has always been part of his life, and I wanted him to stay connected to that side of himself.”

Baptistcare Morrison Gardens’ Lifestyle Coordinator, Carla Rowe, said residents and staff are always in awe when Anthony plays.

“Anthony’s face lights up when his fingers touch the keyboard, and he gets lost in the music,” she said.

“We encourage Anthony to play each week; keeping in touch with the music helps him to stay stimulated, not only on a physical level but mentally and spiritually as well."
