Peter Dutton Says ADF Support for Aged Care Homes Being Considered

Peter Dutton, Australia’s Defence Minister has said that if needed, the government will bring defence personnel into aged care homes to help deal with the Omicron outbreak.

Mr Dutton, who spoke earlier this morning on Nine’s Today show, said that the government has assisted the aged care sector with more than 78’000 additional shifts, but explained that the Commonwealth would step in to do more.

“There’s no limit on what we’re prepared to invest here to make a bad situation better,” he said.

Mr Dutton was asked if he would consider bringing the defence force in the assist, to which he responded, “If that is what is required to fix this problem and to provide dignity to these people, that is what we’ll do.”

Aged care homes across the country have been greatly affected by staff shortages, due to surging COVID cases, with many staff unable to work due to isolation requirements.
