Joan’s Artful Life

on Wednesday, September 7, 2022

BlueCross Grossard Court resident, Joan Everest has always been a natural artist, one of nine children growing up in the Wimmera region all creative in their own way. Joan was first exposed to art and craft by her mother who was a needlework judge for the Country Women’s Association (CWA).

While Joan was well versed in the captivating community CWA fairs, it wasn’t until her later years that she decided to enter an art show. Joan’s art and craft skills are extensive and includes painting, drawing, needlework and sewing.

A few years ago, Joan entered a very elaborate outfit into the Cowes art show and scooped the major prize.

Inspired by the hard work and success of the piece she then entered the Pakenham Art show six months later and once again she won.

Joan now has her prize on display at BlueCross Grossard Court residence for all to see and she is thrilled to have her handy work continue to spark conversation, smiles and compliments. Joan was recently seen donning the Skystrup woman woolen hat ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party, to the delight of her companions.

‘Joan’s Masterpiece’ is called Skystrup Woman. And in her words it is "inspired by a Woman who travelled throughout Australia alone last century. I as an artist have embraced her journey with dedication and excitement. On her cloche I have embossed the animals and birds she would have encountered on her journey. The kangaroos and leaves are hand felted, and the camels are rust dyed. The coloured silk skirt is hand-made. To keep her warm on her journey I made her a hat of twisted wool."

Joan has scooped thousands in prize money and certificates honoring her artistic achievements and while not having as steady a hand as she once did, Joan continues to create beautiful art albeit smaller pieces such as painted bookmarks.
