A large rectangular-shaped photographic mural was also mounted to provide a visually appealing display for residents during meal times.
The mural and foliage have not only added colour to the room, they’ve also created a calmer, more relaxed environment thanks to sound-proof backing.
The calmer environment also makes it easier for residents with dementia to concentrate and engage in conversations with staff and fellow residents.
The residents voted on the mural image, highlighting the famed Queen Victoria statue and surrounding landmark buildings in the middle of the regional Victorian hub.
The reaction from both residents and employees has since been overwhelmingly positive with more people drawn to the area during and outside meal times.
Benetas CEO Sandra Hills OAM said these changes were part of the aged care provider’s commitment to creating comfortable and aesthetically pleasing environments to support residents.
“We were keen to improve the aesthetic and atmosphere in one of the most used areas at Kangaroo Flat. The mural and gardens have encouraged residents to use the space more than just during meal times,” Ms Hills said.
“It was important to have resident input on the type of mural installed in their home. They’ve definitely chosen an image that reflects the local Bendigo area, highlighting the unique history of this wonderful part of Victoria.”
Kangaroo Flat resident Kath said the additions improved the already great communal space where residents came together daily.
“I love the picture. It makes the environment in the dining room bright and homely and happy,” Kath said.
Benetas Kangaroo Flat is positioned on over a hectare of beautifully maintained rose gardens and courtyards, providing residents with genuine, quality care within a tranquil and calm living environment.
