Nasima Mizoi was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, into a large family, the second youngest of eight children. As a child Nasima’s life was idyllic. She lived with her family in a large house surrounded by fruit trees, vegetable gardens and a lot of space to play and run around. The family employed a caretaker, Akter, who tended to the expansive gardens. Nasima remembers him fondly “He was a very kind man, who lived with our family his whole life.”
Throughout our lives music plays an integral part of how we express ourselves often through emotional responses. Music transcends the need for words required for understanding, but rather touch our hearts to engage emotions and memories. Extensive research has shown, even for people living with dementia, music of a deep personal nature can play a significant part in triggering memory of lyrics and experiences connected to music.
The gardens are in bloom at SomerCare's state of the art aged care residence on the Mornington Peninsula and you can enjoy them at an exclusive Open Day weekend this month.
The latest lifestyle initiative to assist residents with dementia at Mercy Health's Mercyville Hostel aged care home in Craigie, involves voice warm-ups, lots of laughter and the creation of a radio show.
