Carlton Captain Chris Judd and leading aged care providers will take part in the Every Australian Counts cycling challenge to showcase support for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
The NDIS has still only been committed to pilot funding by State Governments, meaning only 40,000 Australians will receive funding, when in reality over 400,000 Australians are living with a disability.
“We’re a long way from the NDIS getting across the line” said Paul Ostrowski, CEO from Care Connect, one of the service providers participating in the challenge.
“All that is committed to is pilot funding, meaning enough funding for only 40,000 people and we know there are an excess of 400,000 Australians with disabilities.”
He described the NDIS as “the most important social reform of our time” and that governments needed to commit to the scheme with appropriate funding, not just in principle.
“All sides of parliament have made a commitment in principle, but it’s one thing to make a commitment in principle, and another to make a commitment with the appropriate funding.”
Mr Ostrowski said he feared that the issue would slip away from public awareness and that the Australian public would believe that the issue was over.
“We need to keep the awareness up” he said.
The cycling challenge aims to raise awareness and will run on Sunday, 18th of November at Flemington Racecourse.
Teams will consist of senior executives from Care Connect, Kalyna Care, UnitingCare Community Options, Mambourin, annecto and Scope.
