Media Release: First Course in Understanding & Management of Diabetes Released in Australia

on Tuesday, November 19, 2013

1 in 4 Australian adults (over 25) have diabetes or pre-diabetes.

Diabetes costs Australia over $1 million per hour

7.2 million pharmaceutical scripts were claimed for diabetes medicines in 2011. These statistics show that a lot of Australians have diabetes, and aged/home and community/disability care workers are likely to meet a patient who has the condition in their line of work.

Risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes include getting older and lack of physical activity. Due to many elderly people in residential aged care being immobile, they rely on staff and carers to help with maintaining their blood glucose levels through a healthy diet, physical activity and administration of diabetes medications, injections and insulin.

Aged Care Online has teamed with Diabetes College to promote the Certificate II in Understanding & Management of Diabetes.

The course is written by international health author Ian P McAllister and is currently the only course about diabetes to be nationally accredited by the ASQA (Australian Skills Quality Authority).

The course is a flexible distance learning course (online in 2013) and consists of four individual modules.

Over 18-22 weeks students will understand the principles of diabetes (Module 1), how to manage diabetes (Module 2), prevention, complications and care of diabetes (Module 3) and cardiovascular care for people with diabetes (Module 4).

Activities and assessments can be completed in workshops or at home for flexible, self-paced learning.

QUOTES

“Many elderly people are immobile and cannot maintain a healthy diet, remain active or take medication/insulin due to dementia. Often they cannot self-manage their condition to maintain optimum blood glucose levels, so it is up to the staff or carers” – Ami McAllister, Director of Learning at Diabetes College.

“All the staff or carers should have a general understanding of diabetes to provide effective diabetes care for the elderly” – Ami McAllister.
