National Dementia Awareness Week (DAW) will run from 21-28 September with the aim of encouraging Australians to live a ‘brain healthy lifestyle.’
The week will coincide with World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September and events will be held all over the country including events in Victoria, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland and the ACT.
There has been overwhelming demand for some events, with the free public lecture ‘Brain Health Making the Connection’ in Melbourne changing the venue to accommodate for the demand (moving from the NGV to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre).
The lecture will focus on lifestyle choices that can reduce the risk of developing dementia, by taking action during your 30s, 40s and 50s.
“Looking after your heart, maintaining a healthy blood pressure and getting regular health checks are all great ways to support your brain heart health,” Maree McCabe, CEO of Alzheimer’s Australia said.
“Already there are an estimated 72,000 people living with dementia in Victoria. As our population ages that number is set to skyrocket almost 50 per cent by 2020. The time to take action is now.”
