The Maggie Beer Foundation Featured on A Current Affair

on Monday, December 14, 2015

Maggie Beer recently spoke to Tracey Grimshaw about the wonderful work the Maggie Beer Foundation is doing in aged care homes around Australia.

Maggie’s new mission is to revolutionise life for an entire generation.

In 2010, Maggie was named the Senior Australian of the Year. She was invited to speak to 1000 CEOs of aged care at a conference in Tasmania. In preparation for her speech, Maggie visited a number of aged aged care homes and Meels on Wheels services.

“I saw wonderful things and I saw terrible things,” Maggie said. “But that’s what started it all. Once you see things that aren’t right and you have the ability to change them, you have to.”

“People are working so hard in aged care but they’re not always given the support of ideas and inspiration and easier ways of doing things,” she says.

The Maggie Beer Foundation was formed in 2014 and aims to reach out to all chefs working in retirement villages and aged care homes around Australia.

The Maggie Beer Foundation is working with retirement villages and aged care homes to:

  • Develop menu and meal standards for aged care homes in Australia
  • Provide residents with meal choices on the menu
  • Involve residents and their families in the development and review of menus
  • Review menus regularly to ensure nutritional adequacy and resident satisfaction
  • Use moulded modified texture foods to improve the appearance of meals
  • Plant of edible gardens in aged care homes
  • Increase advocacy and awareness surrounding the current food situation in aged care homes and the need for improvement
