Join Kate Swaffer at Stories of Me Dementia Forum

on Friday, July 15, 2016

Advocate, Author and International Speaker, Kate Swaffer, will share insights from the inner perspective of a person living with dementia at 'Stories of Me - A dementia forum connecting experience and theory', to be held this September during Dementia Awareness Month.

Tickets are now on sale for BaptistCare's 3rd annual dementia forum which will take place on Thursday 15 September 2016 at Waterview, Sydney Olympic Park.

The forum will bring together industry experts, carers and individuals living with dementia for an inspiring exploration of technology and creativity in dementia care.

Kate was a married, working mother of two teenage boys when she was diagnosed with younger onset dementia at the age of 49.

"Even though I had worked in a dementia specific unit in the 1970s as a nurse, I had no idea younger people also get dementia," she said.

"Our youngest son said, 'But mum, I thought that was a funny old person's disease?' We laughed at the time, although we were not laughing on the inside."

Kate will be joined by National Journalist and Network Ten’s Natarsha Belling who will MC the forum, alongside a number of leading academics and engaging storytellers who will take delegates on a journey of personal insights and innovative research.

From virtual reality and time-travelling with technology to engaging with visual arts and HenPower - the one day program is bursting with thought-provoking presentations that will challenge delegates to use their imaginations and consider dementia care from a new perspective.

Kate urged all those interested in person-centred dementia care to attend this unique professional development experience.

"It is imperative that others, including service providers, listen to the stories of people living with dementia, as it is the human cost of dementia that has the power to change hearts and practice."

The forum will begin at 8.30am with refreshments and will conclude at 4.30pm with optional networking drinks and canapés so delegates can relax with colleagues and friends.
