Top Questions to Ask Your Potential Aged Care Provider

on Friday, September 16, 2016

Finding the right aged care home for yourself or a loved one can be an overwhelming and stressful task. When looking for the ideal home, there are many factors you need to take into consideration. One of the first steps you can take is visiting agedcareonline.com.au and searching for aged care homes in your desired area.

By using our comprehensive online directory, you can find out valuable information before you even physically visit the home. You can view images, current vacancies they have available, direct contact information, reviews and a brief description of the services and care types provided.

We have gathered a list of questions that you may like to ask your potential aged care provider:

  • Does the aged care home develop individual care plans for each resident?
  • Does the resident and family members have any input in developing this plan?
  • How often is the care plan assessed and re-evaluated?
  • Is the aged care provider accredited and monitored by the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency?
  • Are there Registered Nurses at the aged care home 24-hours a day?
  • Are residents regularly looked after by the same carers and staff members?
  • Do you ever work short on staff?
  • Can residents choose their own morning and evening routine? (i.e.: waking up early/sleeping in etc.)
  • If a resident chooses to remain in their room for the day, how often are they checked up on?
  • How often does the menu change?
  • Is there a variety of meal choices available?
  • Do residents have a say in the choice of meals available?
  • Are meals prepared fresh on-site every day?
  • Are snacks available on a regular basis?
  • Is there a regular resident/family member survey regarding the satisfaction of services and care provided?
  • What is the policy for complaints/concerns?
  • What types of recreational activities are offered?
  • Are there special services (hairdresser, kiosk, internet access, transportation etc.) available?
  • Do residents have access to a secure (lockable) draw or cupboard in their bedrooms to store personal items?

Once you have found an aged care home in your desired suburb that offers all the services you need, and you or your loved one is settled in comfortably, it is important to visit often. If you can, visit at different times of day (if allowed) to give you a better idea of the care being provided and how that care is being delivered. This will ensure that the highest quality of care for residents is maintained.
