The roar of motorcycles could be heard miles away even before they arrived at Southern Cross Care Lynbrook aged care home.
Heather Chalmers, who moved to the home seven weeks ago, had always wanted to get back on a motorcycle since she last rode on one in her early twenties. Last Sunday, the spirited 74-year-old saw her wish come true when bikers from the Ulysses Motorcycle Club visited the home on their motorcycles.
“I’ve always wanted to get back on one of those machines and go for a spin. I still can’t believe I did it, at my age. I felt so free. That’s another tick off my bucket list,” said Heather who was impressed with her 10-minute ride on the back of a motorcycle, complete with a leather jacket on loan from a friend.
Colin Shaw, 76, also let his hair down that day, riding on the back of a motorcycle and grooving to the tunes beating from the bike. He said, “It was an effort getting on the bike but once I got on I was all right. It was the best feeling especially when music was pumping.”
Heather and Colin were two of the many residents at the home who put motorcycle rides on their wish list of things to do. That’s what prompted the manager of the home, Tania Bugat and care manager Tracey Webster to make contact with the Ulysses Motorcycle Club.
“We have many residents here who were involved in motorcycle clubs when they were younger. The residents would often share their racing stories with other residents and staff, and one thing simply led to another. That’s when we found out that many residents wanted to try something new, something adventurous – like riding on a motorcycle,” said Tania. “We couldn’t stand by and not do anything. That’s what got the ball rolling.”
More than ten residents took turns to go for a ride around the block. Some were contented just touching or admiring the motorcycles, which were parked in the courtyard area. Staff and volunteers at the home were equally delighted with the Club’s visit and hosted a sausage sizzle for everyone.
“The staff and volunteers have been wonderful, organising and putting together this successful event for the residents. We are also grateful to the Ulysses Motorcycle Club for bringing cheer to our residents and giving them an unforgettable experience,” said Tania.
