Founding Audiences Benefit from Expanding #SCCFringe Program

on Wednesday, February 8, 2017

“It’s the people’s festival. No matter where you are, how old you are, or what you are doing, the Adelaide Fringe is yours,” declared David Minear, current Chair Adelaide Fringe at the Southern Cross Care Fringe Program launch. It was a quote originated from the Founding Chair Adelaide Fringe, Frank Ford, who also attended the #SCCFringe Program Launch to share his support.

The Adelaide Fringe is well known to have entertained audiences for more than 50 years, and Adelaideans, as well as international and interstate tourists, turn out in droves and snap up more than 600,000 tickets each year; however it is truly a privilege to bring artists and performers back to, what would be, some of the original audiences at those initial Adelaide Fringe events.

These original shows, and in fact all Adelaide Fringe shows even now, are there in essence to provide an audience to an artist to perform their craft as was Frank Ford’s vision, and Southern Cross Care is very happy to participate.

Southern Cross Care Interim CEO, David Moran said at the launch, “This program sits well with the Southern Cross Care philosophy to keep people connected, healthy and active.”

David continued, “For example, the 2016 Lourdes Valley ArtSpace community event saw over 300 people in attendance, with people taking part in activities and enjoying the atmosphere. All six 2016 Fringe performances had good attendance sizes – some sold out - and the feedback from residents was exceptional. Therefore for 2017, our preference was to “spread the load” and share events across three key sites. This year we are encouraging attendance from the broader SCC community.”

For this season, Southern Cross Care has engaged Julianne Pierce from Art Engineers as their #SCCFringe Producer. Julianne has secured performers such as the Deco Dolls, Louise Blackwell, Michael Cole, Movin’ Melvin Brown, and Prohibition to entertain local audiences.

For the Artspace community events, retired art teachers, artists and painters, nature lovers, flower arrangers, and poets are all lining up to share their skill and passion with Artspace attendees. Southern Cross Care welcomes all to come along and soak in the festive, busking, street performer Fringe atmosphere, and learn a new craft while there. There will be plenty on show at the “ArtSpace” community events.
