To celebrate Men’s Health Week, male residents and employees at Baptistcare Gracehaven Residential Care in Rockingham made the most of the warm winter sunshine by having a barbecue lunch and going for a walk in Rockingham’s HMAS Warramunga Park.
Baptistcare Gracehaven Facility Manager Mark Backhouse highlighted that men’s health is an important issue, not only in aged care but the broader community as well.
“In the past I think the Aussie way was to think, ‘She’ll be right’, avoid the doctors and get on with things. However, things are changing and it’s great to see a focus on men’s health and promoting wellbeing for men,” he explained.
“We celebrated Men’s Health Week by joining our wonderful male residents for a walk around the picturesque park across from Gracehaven, followed by a delicious, healthy barbecue with lots of fresh foods.”
Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to socialise and have lunch together in the beautiful park surrounds.
Stan, one of the residents who attended the Men’s Health Week barbecue, appreciates the proximity of the park.
“It’s very good to have the barbecue here today. This park is so peaceful and lovely, I come here for a walk every day,” he said.
In addition to daily social activities organised for the residents at Baptistcare Gracehaven, the men have a popular Men’s Group which meets weekly to socialise and play pool every Wednesday afternoon. The group is an effective way for the men to regularly connect with each other in an informal setting.
“Having the Men’s Group is great, I enjoy going to that and look forward to it each week. My favourite part is being able to socialise with just the blokes!” said Stan.
