Staff of RSL Care Fernhill, Caboolture donned sombreros and ponchos for the site’s recent Mexican Fiesta Day which featured live music, themed food and classic movies.
The day formed part of the site’s program of monthly National Day celebrations, which give residents a taste of different cultures through a variety of sensory experiences.
The days incorporate cultural food, music, dance and movement, with the Diversional Therapy team adding a splash of colour with decorations and planning activities to ensure all mobility and cognitive needs are meet.
Diversional Therapist Kris Gunn says the days are important as they introduce new stimuli and help residents continue to experience new things.
“These types of events are something new and different for them to experience, and they especially enjoy the music – we have a live musician playing and they are all enjoying listening.,” he says.
“On the Mexican day we served Mexican themed food and we accommodated all our residents who are on texture modified diets.”
Kris is making excellent changes in the nursing home with the introduction of a sensory room for residents to relax in, holding high-teas of an afternoon in the garden and bringing in assistance dogs to visit the residents.
“It’s all about new experiences and keeping people motivated and interested in what we have going on. This is their home and we try to make it feel as homelike as possible.”
