McKenzie Aged Care Heritage Lodge has been announced as a winner in the Primary Care Excellence Awards 2017 for integration and Partnership held earlier this month. In particular, this recognition is for Heritage Lodge’s very sensitive and dedicated approach to palliative care.
The Heritage Lodge Aged Care community in Murwillumbah, has been working very closely with Decision Assist linkages, to ensure the best possible palliative support for its residents.
The result is a more inclusive approach that is already being appreciated by all those at Heritage Lodge who need palliative care, as well as their families.
Helen Bolt, McKenzie’s Registered Nurse Supervisor, has managed this project from inception and is thrilled to see how well it is working. “Its success can be measured by the many conversations that are now taking place about palliative care options. These involve the residents, their families, the GPs and care staff,” Helen explained.
“Like all McKenzie Aged Care communities, we are family run, so we know what a sensitive time this is in everyone’s life,” Helen emphasised. “Now, though, through information sessions and consultations, an Advanced Care Plan or statement of choice can be agreed upon so family, Doctors and staff are aware of the resident’s choices and make appropriate care decisions. This way, Heritage Lodge can ensure that residents and their families wishes are respected by everyone who is involved with their care.”
Another thoughtful improvement has been the introduction of an Honouring Ceremony.
“As a resident leaves us for the final time, we use a beautiful quilt made by their friends in the community,” Helen added. “Then residents, staff and family are invited to form a guard of honour, along with the playing of music and sharing of a few words, such as a poetry recital.”
