When St George & Sutherland Hospitals planned construction of new buildings they knew that the community could play a role in bringing colour and life to the public spaces. Local amateur photographers were invited to submit photos of the St George and Sutherland region with the best ones chosen for permanent display in the new buildings. Free photography workshops were held to make sure member of the community wanting to contribute would have skills to get started.
The Moran Arts Foundation, a charitable organisation and major supporter of the arts in Australia, supported the hospital’s project using their expertise in arts prizes. They now bring to the public a beautiful exhibition of the best Snap for Life photographs.
The Snap for Life exhibition of winner and finalists’ photographs officially opens at the Moran Gallery Sylvania on Wednesday 13 September. The exhibition will be open from Thursday 14 September to Sunday 22 October 2017, 10am to 4pm daily with free entry.
“I’m encouraged by the enthusiasm and excitement upon which the local communities of St George and Sutherland have participated in this exhibition. I particularly enjoyed engaging with the keen and budding local photographers through the workshops organised by Sutherland and St George hospitals and learning what inspires the local community about their environs. From the exhibition, we can perceive a sense of inclusiveness and diversity of vision that embraces the small, big, slow, fast, quiet, loud, young and old. I also hope this is an exhibition that encourages more wannabe photographers to step out, engage with and bear witness to the world around them!” said Snap for Life judge, Shoufay Derz.
The winner of the St George region was Marea Getsios with her photograph of a bench overlooking Botany Bay titled Reserved. The winner of the Sutherland region was Kahn Ficarra with an emotive photograph of Cronulla baths titled Morning motion.
