At Home with the Young and Young at Heart

on Tuesday, December 5, 2017

"When are they coming? When will they be all here?” says Thomas, who eagerly awaits his new found friends. Thomas has his domino set at the ready and loves to win but mostly enjoys the camaraderie and banter with his younger opponents.

Miljenko also enjoys a friendly game of chess and shows a welcoming smile, but underneath he is a serious strategist whose favourite two words are ‘check mate’. Other residents of Bupa Ashfield enjoy activities like reading, story-telling, garden walks and board games and there is really no limit to the fun and friendships that can develop.

The visits are part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award program which fosters youth development. Around 30 students from De La Salle College visit the care home in Ashfield regularly to engage with the residents and put big smiles on faces.

Bupa Ashfield General Manager Susie Carter says the students are wonderful and make such a difference to our resident’s day. ‘It’s just so stimulating for them and keeps their minds active. We have also seen some friendships develop through this regular social interaction.

It could be a game or activity but sometimes they just enjoy a chat’ she says. The students participate in an ongoing series of visits, allowing for understanding and trust to develop with the residents which are essential for a real connection.

De La Salle College Award Coordinator David Carter says the award encourages service to the community. ‘My students have really embraced the principles behind the award and love visiting the residents. They learn about life outside of the college, about caring and responsibility and benefit from their new found friendships’ he says. De La Salle College and Bupa Ashfield have been involved in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award since 2016.
