Gladys Skan is a resident of TLC Aged Care Noble Gardens residential aged care home in Noble Park, and on February 11 2018 she celebrated her 100th birthday.
Gladys was born in England and is blessed with four children, ten grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She grew up in England during the Great Depression and WWII, a time when life was very challenging. In 1940, she married her late husband, Jack, and they migrated to Australia in 1956.
Gladys and Jack travelled extensively around Australia together, and in 1990 celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
The decade of Gladys’ life that she enjoyed the most was her eighties. It was the start of the 21st century and a strong group of friends surrounded her. She was feeling good, having fun and travelling overseas. These trips included a memorable visit to New Zealand, and a visit to her sister in England. Gladys and her sister enjoyed many nostalgic moments together during the visit to her country of birth.
Gladys’ secret for longevity is having a small drop of sherry, for medicinal purposes only! She is a non-smoker, loves her food and has always been conscious of maintaining good health.
Gladys lived on her own until she was 98 and then moved to Noble Gardens. She is very happy for the care, friendship and kindness that the staff and residents show her.
Gladys loves bingo, Friday happy hours and her wonderful family who look after her so well. She says that she “doesn’t feel 100, it’s only a number”.
