Yoga – A Mind-Body Revelation for Aged Care Residents

on Wednesday, February 7, 2018

Yoga is a Sanskrit word and a generic term for uniting the physical, mental, and spiritual disciplines. The several different schools of philosophy of Yoga all strive to achieve the journey of "connection, attachment, or union". With the concept of Yoga as a self-discovery process in mind, KOPWA’s Recreation Officer, Monireh Sisan, engaged Yogamigos to bring yoga to their aged care residents.

Planning tailored activities is significant in dealing with challenging behaviours, such as persons living with Dementia, and Moni is constantly finding ways to help calm restless residents living in Archbold House.

Having Yoga sessions, she hopes to decrease residents’ stresses and also help maintain their motor skills.

Maria from Yogamigos has unique skill sets, and modifies her sessions to suit the residents’ current health and abilities. She creates a fun program to help relieve the anxiety some of our residents experience, and conscientiously observes the level of enjoyment from each participant.

Some less mobile residents benefit from simple breathing exercises and gentle movements from the comfort of their chairs. Practicing yoga also helps to improve strength and balance, which contributes to the benefits of this activity in KOPWA. Archbold House welcomes visiting family members to also participate in these exercise programs.

KOPWA Archbold House is an accredited ageing in place residential aged care residence based in Roseville, New South Wales. KOPWA also provide Home Care support services to more than 50 clients in the suburbs of Northern Sydney. KOPWA commit to being a boutique, not for profit community based organisation, offering exceptional services to the elderly within the Ku Ring Gai and Hornsby areas.
