ANZAC Day is an important day for many Australians, but every year it is particularly important for 90year-old veteran and Mercy Place Parkville resident, Jenny O’Neill.
In 1966, at 38-years-old, Jenny enlisted as a theatre nurse during the Vietnam War, working alongside doctors and fellow nurses to treat wounded soldiers.
Now 90, Jenny reflects on her time serving alongside brave service men and women in what she says was “the right thing to do”.
Jenny now commemorates ANZAC Day by reflecting on her experiences during the Vietnam War and the spirit of fellow service men and women.
“ANZAC Day is hugely important for me, it gives me, and other men and women who served, a chance to share stories and experiences of our time in the forces,” Ms O’Neill said.
Mercy Place Parkville Service Manager Maryann McCusker said ANZAC Day is a significant day for many residents.
“It’s a day of remembrance and respect for our residents. We have veterans, war widows and families who were all touched by the effects of war,” Ms McCusker said.
“ANZAC Day provides an opportunity for residents to open up and share their experiences, leaning on one another for support.”
