Residents at Benetas St George's aged care residence have moved into newly renovated apartment style living quarters, based on the world leading Benetas model of care of providing a more home-like approach to living.
The new Peter Volk Apartments at St Georges are being delivered in two stages with stage one now complete. It comprises two apartments of 15 rooms in each, set around dedicated living, dining and kitchen facilities.
The principle behind the new model of care is placing residents’ needs at the centre of everything we do.
Residents have choice and control over their environment, allowing them to make their own decisions about their daily routine. The focus of care shifts from being task oriented to providing care around the individual resident, their wants and needs.
Each apartment has its own dedicated primary carer which allows for more personal and engaging care as well as more self-determination for residents. A Registered Nurse (RN) is also available for clinical support at any time, day or night.
St. George’s resident Barbara Smith was very excited to move into her new room. “I’m loving my new home. It’s got a lovely cosy, home-like feel and the new design is really welcoming and full of light.”
“It is great to have access to a kitchen and my neighbours and I enjoy eating together in our private dining room,” she said.
Benetas CEO Sandra Hills OAM said the redevelopment is the culmination of a lot of hard work and a commitment to implementing our new approach to aged care.
“Research shows that residents living in smaller home-like clusters have a better quality of life and fewer hospital admissions.
“The concept is relatively new to the Australian market and Benetas is excited to be at the forefront of this new approach to care.”
With stage one now complete, the second stage of refurbishment of the original Peter Volk wing will commence and is expected will be taking new residents from November 2018.
