“It’s a wonderful thing to keep getting invited to parties in your old age,” Hippocrates Australian Greek Aged Persons Association president Anna Marendy says. “You feel remembered, you feel like you’re still a part of the community.”
That’s why the Hippocrates Association always extends an invite to the residents at Fronditha Care Newcastle residential aged care home.
For the elderly who don’t have many family or friends, the Christmas holiday period can be particularly hard.
Many feel lonely or depressed, and it can act as a reminder of those they have lost.
That’s why these small but significant acts, of inviting their fellow neighbours to a special event is key.
Next month, the residents will join the association’s members and friends and family to celebrate Christmas the Greek way.
On 2 December 2018, the association will have live music, a huge buffet of traditional food and Greek sweets.
The kids (and young at heart) will even get a chance to say hello to Santa at the event.
For the elderly residents, it’s one of many Christmas celebrations organised by the lifestyle and activity staff for December.
As Facility Manager Judith Cornish says, the best gift at Christmas is when the residents are visited by family and friends.
“I see them perk up, they smile more and they become chattier. It does wonders for their mental health, and the effects last much longer than people realise.”
She encourages people to think of the elderly this festive season, and become regular visitors.
Fronditha Care offers a volunteer program that links residents with regular visitors based on their interests.
To become a volunteer, please call the facility on (02) 4016 4160.
The Hippocrates Australian Greek Aged Persons Association Christmas Party on 2 December will be held at 30 Crebert St, Mayfield East and is open to all who would like to attend. Tickets are $30, and includes food and drinks. Call Anna Marendy on 0410 597 859
