Seniors Delight In Launch of Local History Documentary

The residents and guests of St Patrick’s Green Retirement Village were recently treated with the soft launch of Anne Field and Bob Hallett’s documentary on the Moorefield Racecourse. St Patrick’s Green hosted the event, and residents enjoyed reminiscing on the history of the Kogarah area, that if it weren’t for Anne Field, was at risk of being forgotten. 

The village was honoured to have former jockeys in attendance for the first screening of the Moorefield Racecourse documentary. Special guests included Ray Selkrig OAM (1961 Melbourne Cup winner) and Ted Mills, who both rode in the last race meeting on 14 July 1951 at Moorefield, and Cliff Clare, who rode in races and barrier trials.

Anne Field and Bob Hallett’s film is a celebration of our local history, delving into the traditions of the racecourse and the role it played in the Kogarah community. The crowd listened and laughed as Anne interviewed a variety of people, all with an interesting recollection or quirky story to tell about the glory days of Moorefield Racecourse.

A particular story of interest, which struck a chord for many of the St Patrick’s Green residents, was the story of the priest of St Patrick’s Church at the time. He was known for being a bit of a larrikin and enjoyed getting down to the track.
