Free Dementia Care Training To Be Rolled Out By Braemar

on Friday, February 15, 2019

Braemar Presbyterian Care is offering free workshops on dementia training for its staff and volunteers, which it is also opening up to family members and the wider community.

The first workshop, will take place on Tuesday 26 February from 12.30pm – 2.30pm, with further sessions planned on 26 March, 23 April and 25 June. The workshops, which will take place at Willagee Community Centre, will cover all aspects of good dementia care, including care planning, communication and how to respond to challenging behaviours.

Dementia Consultant at Care Partnerships Australia, Michelle Harris-Allsop, who will be heading up the workshops, says dementia impacts everyone in the community and is the biggest health challenge of the 21st century.

“Statistics show that one person every three seconds receives a diagnosis of dementia around the globe, and the key issues for family carers include finding help and support, particularly with emotions such as guilt and fear of the future,” she says.

“The workshop will focus on the quality of life aspects for people with dementia, including the importance of activities and also practical strategies to support people, their carers and families. The main focus will be person-centred care, dignity in care and supporting people to feel confident as a carer.

“We would like as many people as possible to benefit from these free workshops and would welcome anyone who would benefit to get in contact with us.”

All workshops will take place at Willagee Community Centre which is located on Archibald Street and Winnacott Street. To register, please contact Isabella Carcione at Braemar on (08) 6279 3636.

Dementia incorporates several illnesses which can cause a gradual decline in someone’s ability to remember, think, concentrate, and to learn, and is a leading cause of entry into aged care.
