At this year’s National Volunteer Week, Mercy Health celebrated some of its outstanding volunteers who give back at its aged care homes.
At Mercy Place Parkville, Sister Sylvia is famous for starting the home’s Italian club. Born in Sicily, Sister Sylvia immigrated to Australia as a young child. Now she connects with residents at the Parkville home by talking and singing in Italian.
“Sylvia is a great accordion player, and we often hear residents joining in and singing along with her,” says Mercy Place Parkville Service Manager Rachelle Regis.
“As soon as the residents hear her singing they light up with excitement – she really is an irreplaceable part of the community.”
Over at Mercy Place Montrose in Melbourne’s east, volunteering is not just of the human variety. Sheila Bentham comes as part of a package deal, bringing along her ten year old poodle Maggie.
Mercy Place Montrose General Manager Bronwyn Gilmore says she loves seeing the joy Maggie brings to residents.
“Sheila and Maggie have such a positive impact at the home. They’ve become an integral part of the Montrose community, and our animal-loving residents are always excited to see the pair.
“Some of our residents really connect well with animals, so it’s great to have such a dedicated volunteer who can provide this type of interaction.”
Mercy Health is even lucky enough to see passionate volunteers turn their love for caring into a career.
Lifestyle Assistant at Mercy Place East Melbourne Lewis Prai Wellip knew a career in aged care was for him after volunteering at the home.
East Melbourne Service Manager Kate Page says that Lewis’ dedication to residents was clear from the start.
“Lewis started volunteering whilst he was a student and as soon as he finished his studies, he came straight to work with us. You’ll often find Lewis playing cards in the garden with residents or swapping stories of travel adventures,” says Ms Page.
Mercy Health has a vibrant volunteering program available at all its aged care homes.
