Join World Renowned Expert Teepa Snow for a Positive Approach to Dementia Care Workshop

on Tuesday, August 20, 2019

Uniting is excited to host world leading dementia care specialist Teepa Snow at a workshop on Thursday 22 August. This is a unique opportunity for staff, caregivers and health care professionals to spend time with a world leader in dementia to learn practical ways we can support people living with dementia.

Designed for health care professionals, caregivers and families of those living with dementia, the workshop will explore positive and innovative approaches to dementia care from the time of diagnosis and living at home, to care in residential aged care, palliative and end-of-life support.

Research shows that those who gain an increased understanding of dementia not only reduce carer stress but deliver impactful, compassionate and improvement-led care and support that improves outcomes for the person living with dementia.

"It is essential that organisations continue to invest in developing a workplace culture that inspires and supports their teams to deliver quality dementia care. At Uniting, we take a holistic approach to care and this includes creating positive life experiences for older people," said Lana Richards, Uniting Executive Manager (Ageing) Practice Excellence.

"We support our older people to fulfil their hopes, dreams and ambitions to continue to live meaningful lives beyond a move into aged care. It's a great privilege to be able to learn more about their lives and enable them to grab life with both hands and tick off some of the items on their wish list. This bold and positive approach to care helps challenge the stigma associated with dementia," said Lana.

The workshop is a unique opportunity to hear from the leading international expert in the field on positive and practical ways to care for those living with dementia. The workshop will focus on the cognitive, behavioural and physical aspects of dementia care and includes:

  • understanding dementia symptoms and behaviours
  • sharing some creative and practical tips to get through the day
  • making moments of joy for those living with dementia
  • matching your help to the needs and abilities of the person with dementia.

"Engaging and working with people living with dementia is now a core skill for staff, caregivers and community. Uniting continues to be bold and challenge the stigma surrounding ageism and dementia in society and is proud to be hosting Teepa," said Lana.

Research according to Dementia Australia advises that in 2019, there is an estimated 447,115 Australians living with dementia. Without a medical breakthrough, the number of people with dementia is expected to increase to 589,807 by 2028 and 1,076,129 by 2058.

"Given the rate of diagnosis; society, not just aged care providers, need to grow our understanding and support of people living with dementia," said Lana.
