mecwacare Celebrates Diamond Jubilee

on Thursday, August 1, 2019

Aged care and disability services provider mecwacare celebrated its 60th anniversary at a gala event that included special guest, the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria.

About 200 people attended the celebration at mecwacare’s brand new residential aged care facility Jubilee House in Caulfield, which featured a special performance by the world-renowned Melbourne Welsh Male Choir.

The Governor, who officially opened Jubilee House, paid homage to mecwacare’s long history of providing care and support in the community. It was the fourth time a Governor of Victoria has opened a mecwacare facility in the organisation’s 60-year history.

Chief Executive Michele Lewis told the gathering that mecwacare was made up of three core ingredients: Community, diversity and passion.

“We are proudly a not-for-profit, values-driven and diverse organisation where the true spirit of caring, in partnership with the community, remains at the core of everything we do,” Ms Lewis said.

mecwacare’s growth and achievements since it was founded by a small group of volunteers in 1959 were highlighted throughout the proceedings. Board Chair John Hood said it was remarkable to think that the organisation started with a voluntary committee whose first financial decision was to employ a part-time cook.

From those humble beginnings in Malvern, mecwacare is now a major provider of residential, home, nursing and support services for more than 15,000 people across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.
