Aged care residents at Mercy Place East Melbourne have been exploring the globe through the ‘World in Focus’ series, taking residents on journeys to different countries and cultures.
Each session focuses on a country and provides an opportunity for the presenter to talk about a place that has meant a lot to them. From Scotland to Argentina and China, residents have learned more about the politics, food and culture of each country.
‘World in Focus’ recognises that aged care residents have a wealth of knowledge and experiences to share. The program was designed to intellectually engage residents, with presentations delivered in the style of a university lecture.
Residents delve into discussions about changes to politics and education and, with many residents having travelled extensively in their younger years, looking at what has changed is a favourite topic of conversation.
As well as stories from staff and residents, the program has had several guest speakers from the local community.
Didi at the Lotus Children’s Foundation spoke about her life in Mongolia and Joan Woods from Aboriginal Progress brought the series closer to home, sharing Aboriginal culture and history with residents.
Service Manager Gurpreet Kaur says the program is a great way to celebrate Australian diversity and history.
“We have residents from all over the world, and sharing their stories is an important way to connect,” Gupreet said. “Our residents have so much knowledge and history to share and it’s been great to see how much everyone is enjoying learning.”
“This activity is important for the health and wellbeing of our residents; they really respond to each speaker and we’ve had some great discussions.”
