Diwali is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year, and recently team members and residents at Arcare Parkinson joined in celebrating the Hindu festival of lights.
During the festival, people decorate their homes with lights and oil lamps, called diyas.
The lights and lamps are said to help the Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi find her way into peoples’ homes, bringing prosperity in the year to come, but Diwali is also a time to have fun with friends and family!
They exchange gifts and sweets and get together to enjoy delicious homemade feasts.
At Arcare Parkinson, a few team members brought in their culture’s traditional dishes to share.
Many also dressed up in sarees and dresses that had lots of delicate beads and sequins.
The residents all loved the beautifully bright colours on the traditional outfits.
“I don’t think I’ve seen ever such colourful costumes! Maybe next year I can try one on,” one resident commented.
Being able to celebrate multiculturalism in aged care is truly wonderful.
As Diwali is a time of bonding and socialising, Arcare are also encouraging residents and team members to form meaningful friendships with one another and take the time to learn about each other’s cultures.
