Showing Solidarity Through Music at BlueCross Broughtonlea

on Thursday, July 9, 2020

Anisha Ravishankar loved her fortnightly visits to BlueCross Broughtonlea in Surrey Hills. With her saxophone in tow, the Year 9 student at Presbyterian Ladies’ College had been getting residents’ feet tapping to her uplifting and jazzy music for months until the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to her visits.

Although current BlueCross visitor restrictions have prevented Anisha from visiting the home, she was keen to continue showing her support for the residents and staff during this challenging time through other means.

When she found out Broughtonlea staff were making a Superheroes sign in front of the home to pay tribute to all frontline healthcare workers, she jumped at the chance to get involved. She also dropped off some bags of home-baked cookies at the home for staff to enjoy. However, her biggest effort was on Saturday 5 June, when she organised a driveway concert for Broughtonlea.

With the help of her parents, Anisha distributed flyers around the neighbourhood, inviting the community to come along to show their support for Broughtonlea and hear her play the saxophone.

In her flyer, she said, “You may have noticed the sign outside Broughtonlea aged care home, recognising workers for their tireless efforts as they continue to look after the most vulnerable in our society during this pandemic."

“We thought it would be wonderful to give them some public recognition as well. We would be very grateful if you could join us in this act of love and support.”

Anisha’s invitation touched many hearts and saw well-wishers from the community lining up along the driveway and street to show their solidarity, joined by residents and staff.

“Anisha brightened everyone’s day as she played some lovely tunes for residents and staff on the driveway, including the hit tune Hero by Mariah Carey,” says Jacqueline Cameron, Residence Manager at BlueCross Broughtonlea.

“And when everyone applauded at the end of the concert to show their appreciation for our staff members, it was both a heartwarming and emotional moment for us all.

“The pandemic may have brought new challenges in how we support and care for our residents, but we will continue to place the health and wellbeing of our residents and the BlueCross community as our top priority.”
