Will New Drink Be Everyone’s Cup of Tea at Mercy Place Lathlain?

on Wednesday, August 19, 2020

The resident chef at Mercy Place Lathlain will provide some food for thought this week when seniors at the not-for-profit residential home spill the beans on the latest beverage to be introduced on to the drinks menu – a lightly fermented, sweetened tea drink known for its medicinal benefits.

In fact several flavours of kombucha will be taste tested by residents during the feedback session, all of which have been handcrafted by chef Ranjan Kumar to include all of the benefits that the fermented drink is known for – beneficial bacteria thought to promote improved digestion and strengthen the immune system.

The tasting session will provide feedback to the kitchen team, who are focused on providing residents with a range of refreshing beverages, in addition to healthy food, which can not only be enjoyed by residents, but also have optimal nutritional benefits.

Mercy Place Lathlain Service Manager, Mark Flores, says Mercy Health believes delicious fresh food and refreshing and healthy beverages are critical for the health and well-being of residents.

“Kombucha is a fermented tea that has been consumed for thousands of years and, the more we have researched it, the more we have become impressed by its purported health benefits, including beneficial probiotics,” explains Mr Flores.

“At Mercy Health, we strive to ensure our residents enjoy the most nutritious diet possible, so when Ranjan suggested intruding kombucha to the drinks menu, we were very keen to explore the idea with residents and gain their feedback.”

Kombucha is a fermented tea drink made from green or black tea and is believed to have originated in China about 2,000 years ago. It’s made by adding a colony of live bacteria and yeast to sweetened tea and leaving it to ferment for a few weeks until it turns into a slightly sweet, slightly tart refreshing beverage. It contains B vitamins, antioxidants and probiotics.
