Dulcet tones and sweet serenading will soon be heard at Mercy Place Mont Clare as residents are treated to a choir performance by Waratah Community singers next month.
The dulcet tones that emanate from the group of seven performers – who are named after Waratah Avenue in Dalkeith, where they rehearsed regularly in their formative days – will include songs from musicals, Australian classics and also African American gospel. Resident participation is also encouraged and is a strong factor in the performances.
As well as accomplished singers, the choir also includes a pianist and violinist, as well as members playing the ukulele and percussion instruments.
Catherine Plowman, Co-ordinator of the Waratah Community singers, says this week’s performance will be the first return to Mercy Place Mont Clare following the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We consider it a privilege to share our love of music with others, including the Mont Clare community,” she says. “It uplifts us to hear the audience reminisce and sing along to some of their favourite tunes.”
Mercy Place Mont Clare Service Manager, Surabh Nair, said the therapeutic effect of music for seniors, particularly those living with dementia and other related conditions, couldn’t be overstated.
“Generally speaking, music is an incredible trigger for emotions and memories from our past to emerge, and we are very thankful to the Waratah Community singers for volunteering their time and performing for our residents,” he said.
“Extensive research indicates that singing is mentally and physically beneficial in so many ways, and we are very grateful to the ladies for assisting our residents to continue to enjoy music.”
