Career Growth in the WA Home Care Industry

Building meaningful relationships with home care customers and their families provides enormous job satisfaction. No two days are the same. Career prospects in the home care industry are on the rise as more Western Australian seniors choose to stay living independently in their own homes for as long as possible.

For Baptistcare’s Michael Ladner, the role of Assistant Hub Manager (Metro) is the latest step in a career that brings him variety, challenge and enormous job satisfaction.

“Each one of our home care customers has a different view as to what living at home looks like. To help people achieve how they want to live life in their senior years is a very special process to be part of,” Michael says.

“Hearing them say they are able to continue living a meaningful, fulfilling and happy life gives you the satisfaction that the work you do is having a real impact.

“My new role is still very customer-focused. I spend most of my time out on the road meeting people and making sure everything is flowing and working out well.”

Michael worked in palliative care and disability care and spent two years working the night shift in a hospital before finding his niche in the home care industry in 2020  as a Home Care Support Worker.

“It is such as diverse and enjoyable industry. No two days are the same; something new comes up every day and gives you something to learn.”

As an Assistant Hub Manager, Michael is drawing on his learning from the Diploma of Enrolled Nursing he completed in 2017.

“I’m using some of the skills and strategies learned to further better the outcomes for our home care customers,” he says.

Michael’s role reflects the aged care provider’s fresh approach to home care and building meaningful relationships with home care customers and their families.

Service hubs and a team-based structure mean our Care Team can work more collaboratively to help elderly Western Australians age well in their own homes.

Most have lived in their home for many years and enjoy vital social interactions with neighbours, friends and their local community, from the postie to the staff in their local newsagents.

As well as providing help with chores around the house and personal care, home care visits are an opportunity to catch up for a chat and to share stories and memories.

Family members know their loved ones are in good hands if they have the support of a home care worker providing that extra help and social support where it’s needed.

“It’s an incredibly fulfilling industry to work in,” Michael says. “You get your hard days and tricky situations, but I thoroughly enjoy my work and look forward to continuing to impact people’s lives in the process.

“There is no black and white way to set up and assist someone’s care in their own home. It is an individual process with the overarching goal of enabling them to live independently in their own home as long as possible.”
