Labor vs Liberal: What the Major Parties Are Promising for Aged Care

on Tuesday, May 3, 2022

With the federal election just weeks away, and COVID still very much a top concern for many aged care providers, both Albanese and Morrison have announced their plans to support the aged care sector.

Liberal's Aged Care Plans

  • Care time: Increasing the time nurses and carers are required to spend with residents
  • Funding: Making an additional payment of $10 per day per resident to boost the viability of the aged care sector
  • Training: Providing 33,000 new training places for personal carers and a new Indigenous workforce
  • Bonuses: Retention bonuses for nurses
  • Respite care: Increased access to respite services

Labor's Aged Care Plans

  • Registered Nurses: Qualified Registered Nurses on-site at every residential aged care home, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week
  • More carers with more time to care: each aged care resident will receive an average of 215 minutes of care per day, as recommended by the Royal Commission
  • Pay rise for aged care staff: Labor will support workers’ calls for better pay at the Fair Work Commission
  • Better food for aged care residents: A Labor Government will develop and implement mandatory nutrition standards for all aged care homes
  • Dollars going into care: Labor will make all residential aged care providers report what they are spending their money on, with the Aged Care Safety Commissioner powers to keep providers accountable

The 2022 Australian federal election will be held on Saturday, 21 May 2022
