True Blue Centenarian Enjoys Independent Lifestyle

on Friday, May 27, 2022

On 28 May 2022, independent living client, Mr Keith Lord, will celebrate his centenarian birthday at his home in Murray Bridge, with wife, and life companion, Joyce. As a client of Resthaven Murray Bridge, Hills & Fleurieu Community Services, Keith is a "true blue rural-ite."

"I was born in Broken Hill in 1922, with five siblings – I’m the last of them now," explains Keith.

"My mother was a station cook growing up, and dad was a boundary rider. We were true country-dwellers."

Keith’s family lived on and off stations, with Keith and his siblings attending the local school in Perponda.

"I enjoyed football during those years, and my local Perponda teammates."

Keith decided to leave his schooling at the age of 14, with plans on becoming a farmer.

"It was always my goal to be a farmer. I was quite good at clearing land and riding horses – I enjoyed it all."

"Dad and I did all sorts – rabbiting and picking stumps, walking miles to set traps."

During World War II, Keith found employment shearing sheep. Soon, he found work as a grazier, which he enjoyed until retiring in later years.

In 1950, Keith met and married his wife, Joyce, who has been there every step of the way.

"My most memorable highlight of my 100 years is marrying Joyce, and the five children she gave us."

The newlyweds purchased their first home, where they reside today, in Murray Bridge.

Enjoying a life of adventure together, Keith and Joyce travelled around Australia in their caravan, feeling thankful to still be in their first home after all these years.

"We have all our memories in this house. We are proud of our home here."

Thanks to the team at Resthaven Murray Bridge, Hills & Fleurieu Community Services, Keith and Joyce are assisted to continue living in their home.

As Keith’s milestone birthday approaches, he reflects, "I never smoked, and hardly drank."

His words of wisdom are, "Enjoy life – you only have one."

Many happy returns, Mr Lord!
