Pet Therapy at Regis Legana

on Friday, August 5, 2022

Mabel, Lolly and Disco are three beloved furry friends who regularly visit residents at Regis Legana. The visits from the Golden Retriever, Lhasa Apso and Greyhound are a highly anticipated event each week, as they bring so much joy to residents and staff alike.

Now, some of the residents are even offering babysitting duties for these lovable dogs whilst they are at the home, which has become so popular that they often ask if they “can stay with me for the night?”

Mabel, Lolly and Disco are highly intuitive and have a sense of knowing when someone needs extra attention from them and will always stay with them for a couple of hours at a time when needed.

These visits have such positive effects on the residents, sparking warm and fuzzy feelings of nostalgia.

“They remind me of my darling little pet who was my life-long companion” says Doris, who has become particularly fond of Mabel the Golden Retriever.

“Mabel and I talk to each other… we debrief about the day and the week and have an understanding.”

The connections bring abundant joy and affection to the residents at Regis Legana, as these special guests leave a lasting impression on everyone they meet.

Pet Therapy, also known as Assisted Animal Therapy, is becoming increasingly popular throughout aged care. Pets not only offer companionship and unconditional love, but can also boost mental health and general wellbeing, especially in older people.

There are many benefits to spending time with animals, including decreasing stress levels, easing social discomfort, and increasing happiness. Regis has included Pet Therapy into the Lifestyle Calendar across many homes and has already seen these benefits among residents.
