Trip Down Memory Lane with EKKA Celebrations at Arcare QLD

on Thursday, August 25, 2022

It was an endless day of EKKA fun at Arcare Logan Reserve, Parkinson and Seven Hills as the residents enjoyed Strawberry Sundaes, Dagwood dogs, showbags, lollies, and even carnival games such as Spin the Wheel and Ball Toss.

"Many of the residents used to go to the EKKA with their families, so we decided to bring the EKKA to them. They had a great time reminiscing on cherished memories," Lifestyle Coordinator Jodie at Parkinson said.

The Old Macdonald Animal Farm also dropped by for a visit with baby lambs, goats, alpacas, Bantams, chickens, ducks and guinea pigs. For the residents, one of the highlights was getting up close to many adorable farm animals and everyone had the opportunity to pat, cuddle and feed them all.

“I could cuddle them all day!” Resident Geraldine from Parkinson said.

Many of the animals have been taken in after they were initially rejected by their own mother and now, they have been given a second chance at bringing joy and lasting memories to others.

It was amazing to see resident Dell engaging with the Old Macdonald staff by asking questions and interacting with the animals by giving plenty of cuddles and handfeeding them.

"The farm animals were a big hit with team members and residents as some used to own farms with their own chickens, goats and cows," Lifestyle Coordinator Kam from Logan Reserve shared.

There were also plenty of sideshow alley games such as basketball, guess-the-lollies-in-a-jar, lucky dip, and knock down cans at Arcare Logan Reserve and Seven Hills. Residents were given showbags, so no one missed out on the celebrations.

Arcare Seven Hills organised for Julie Frost, daughter of resident Brenda Calvert to video-call the community from Gunaba Cattle Farm in rural Queensland.

Julie introduced all her animals and their different personalities, fed them, discussed breeding and conducted a Q&A with the residents.

They held a fashion parade at their afternoon high tea where other residents voted on Best Dressed with winners receiving great prizes.

By bringing the EKKA to the Arcare residences, the Lifestyle teams were able to help the residents relive their childhood memories of going to the Ekka. Time went by so quickly as everyone ate the delicious EKKA treats and socialised over games. It certainly was a joyful trip down memory lane!
